455 Francis Vaughn Tobin (Frank) was born Feb 17, 1899 in Burlington Junction, MO (Nodaway county) to Thomas Tobin 1866-1941 (of Callan, County Kilkenny, Ireland) and Ellen (Nell) Vaughn 1867-1928 (born in Martinsburg, W Virginia). Frank was the 3rd child: 1.Jim Tobin 1894-1959, 2.Bob Tobin 1895-1973 (and Vivian), 4.Irene Tobin Blatter 1900-1963, 5.Ed Tobin 1902-1983 (and Nora), 6.Catherine Tobin 1904-1973 (and Ed Zivny). Frank grew up on the farm 2 miles east of Burlington Junction. He attended Conception, MO HS and studied at St. Benedict's College, Atchison, KS. He bought his grandads farm just west of his dad's place and built a house in 1927 (GPS 40,26,57 N 95,00,48 W).
He married Nora Catherine Kelly 1903-1938 of Ford City, MO at Stanberry, MO on Sep 29, 1927. They had 7 children in 10 years. His 5th child was Kieran Joseph who was born July 6, 1934 with a condition like a "blue baby" and died age 2 on July 14, 1936 when Nora was due to have her 6th child a month later, Mary Ellen. Nora died at the birth of her 7th child with scarlet fever on Jan 30, 1938. The baby, Terrance, died the day before on Jan 29th. With the contagion, they were both buried simply at St. Patrick's Cemetery, Maryville, MO.
Frank had helpers with the children until he married Nora's sister, Margaret Ellen Kelly 1897-1963 on Jan 4, 1941 at St. Joseph Cathedral (MO) by Frank's first cousin with the same name, Fr. Francis Tobin. Margaret then had Frank's 8th child, Charles Philip Tobin (Fr. Chuck) on July 17, 1942.
Frank suffered with arthritis greatly but died of heart in St. Bernard's Hospital, Council Bluffs, IA on May 2, 1950. His funeral on May 5th by his cousin, Fr. Tobin, Francis Vaughn (I13157)

456 Francis was born 11 years after his parents' wedding. The long delay in producing an heir may have been due to his father's repudiation of his mother in favour of his mistress Diane de Poitiers, but this repudiation was mitigated by Diane's insistence that Henry spend his nights with Catherine.

King Henry II, his father, arranged a remarkable betrothal for his son to Mary, Queen of Scots, in the Châtillon agreement of 27 January 1548, when Francis was only four years old. Mary had been crowned Queen of Scotland in Stirling Castle on 9 September 1543 at the age of nine months following the death of her father James V. Mary was a granddaughter of Claude, Duke of Guise, a very influential figure at the court of France. Once the marriage agreement was formally ratified, the six-year-old Mary was sent to France to be raised at court until the marriage. She was tall for her age and eloquent, and Francis was unusually short and stuttered.

On 24 April 1558, Francis and Mary married in Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. It was a union that could have given the future kings of France the throne of Scotland and also a claim to the throne of England through Mary's great-grandfather, King Henry VII of England. As a result of the marriage, Francis became King Consort in Scotland until his death. The marriage produced no children, and may never even have been consummated, possibly due to Francis's illnesses or undescended testicles.

A sickly and weak-willed young man, Francis became a tool of the Guises, who saw an opportunity for power and a chance to break the Huguenot strength within the kingdom. To defeat the Guises, Louis de Bourbon, prince de Condé and Huguenot leader, planned the conspiracy of Amboise (March 1560), an abortive coup d?etat in which some Huguenots surrounded the Château of Amboise and tried to seize the King. The conspiracy was savagely put down, and its failure strengthened the power of the Guises. This in turn frightened Francis? mother, Catherine, who then tried to balance the situation by securing the appointment of the moderate Michel de L?Hospital as chancellor.

In the hopes of gaining peace and rehabilitating court finances, the States General was summoned, but Francis died soon after the session began at Orléans. His death temporarily ended the Guises? dominion and saved Condé, who had been sentenced to death for high treason. Francis was succeeded by his brother, Charles IX.

457 François Brossard, progenitor of one of the most notable Acadian families, was born in c1653 perhaps in Anjou, France, to parents still unknown and may have come to the colony in 1671 aboard the ship L'Oranger. He married Catherine, daughter of Michel Richard dit Sansoucy and Madeleine Blanchard, at Port-Royal in c1678. They settled on haute rivière, now the upper Annapolis River, at a place called Beausoleil. Not long after his marriage, François "collaborated with Pierre Thibodeau in the colonization of Chepoudy, but he did not go to settle there himself." In early 1711, François was one of several residents of the haute rivière jailed by British commander Samuel Vetch. François and Catherine had 11 children, including six sons, all born at Beausoleil, five of whom created families of their own. Four of their daughters married into the Landry, Doucet, Préjean, and Bourg families. François died suddenly at his farm on haute rivière in December 1716, in his early 60s.
The census of 1698 states they have 15 cattle, 20 sheep, 14 hogs and 16 arpents with 2 fruit trees, 2 guns and 1 servant.
Broussard, Jean-Francois (I4877)

458 François Girouard dit La Varenne came from France with his wife Jeanne Aucoin, according to two depositions, one made by his great-grandson Pierre Richard (Doc. inéd., Vol. II, p. 191), and another made by Louis Courtin, husband of his great-great-granddaughter Marie-Josèphe Martin (ibid., Vol. III, p. 27). Both of these depositions erroneously call the Girouard ancestor Jacques, instead of François, probably because the deponents presumed that he had borne the same first name as his elder son, to whom they were both connected. François is the name that one finds, however, in three Acadian censuses and in his younger son?s marriage record in the register of Beaubassin.?
Per Stephen White, Fracois arrived in Acadia about the year 1640. He was a Ploughman and Laboreur.

He died in exile to Bristol, England, after the state of Virginia would not let the Acadians disembark on their shores.

"The 'Virginia Packet' arrived at Bristol in the middle of June in 1756 with 289 Acadians. The town was unprepared for their arrival. For 3 days & nights, the Acadians were left on the wharves. Then they were put in old, ruined buildings. Many died of smallpox and exhaustion.
La Rochette visited the Acadians at Bristol after the Liverpool Acadians told him of their location. On Jan. 31, he arrived at Bristol. He again found distrust. But upon hearing their story, he felt sympathy towards them. They told him of the 340 that had been shipped from Virginia, 300 survived the trip."

and

'Bristol was known for the slave trade in the past. "Apparently the Acadians were prisoners in Stapleton, 5 km north of the city[Bristol], near the Frome River." It had been the location of POWs of England's battles with France and Spain in America. On March 18, 1780, Francois Michel & Anne Daigle told the rector at St. Martin de Chantenay that before their son Francois was born, they had been married in Stapleton, England.' [From Nantes to Louisiana, p. 14-15]

He is believed to be buried in the mass grave, along with those who died of smallpox and exhaustion, shortly after arriving in Bristol.
Brault dit Pominville, François (I8951)

462 Francois Leger was born 14 Oct 1714 to Jacques Leger dit Rosette and Madeleine Trahan and was baptized the same day with his godfather being his elder brother Jacques Leger fils and his godmother being Francoise Comeau.(RG 1, Vol.26, p.130)

He married Magdeleine Comeau, the daughter of Abraham Comeau and Marguerite Pitre on 25 May 1739 at the same church where they'd both been baptized.(RG 1, Vol. 26a, p.192)

They had the following children, all baptized at Port Royal, except for the last:
1. Joseph Leger bn. 11 Apr 1740 (RG 1, Vol.26a, p.201)
2. Jean Baptiste Leger bn. 22 Sep 1741 (RG 1, Vol.26a, p.211)
3. Marie Josephe Leger bn. 8 Mar 1743 (RG 1, Vol.26a, p.242)
4. Scholastique Leger bn. 20 Sep 1744 (RG 1, Vol.26a, p.278)
5. Francois Leger bn. 22 Feb 1746 (RG 1, Vol.26a, p.308)
6. Charles Leger bn. 15 Jun 1749 (RG 1, Vol.26a, p.386)
7. Marguerite Leger bn. 6 Mar 1751 (RG 1, Vol.26a, p.427)
8. Anne Leger bn. 11 Apr 1753 (RG 1, Vol.26a, p.483)
9. Paul Leger bn. abt. 1759 in New York according to his marriage record. (SM Ch.: v.4, #32)

The entire family was deported by the British to Connecticut in 1755 during Le Grand Derangement and his name appeared on the 14 Aug 1763 list of Acadian Families in Connecticut who desired to go to France and indicated there were 10 people in his family wishing to do so. It's not certain why the family wishing to go to France was one person short. Had a child died? Perhaps a child had married; if so it's likely it was a daughter since no other Leger's were on the list. Regardless, they did not go to France, but reportedly ended up in Santo Domingo (St. Domingue in French and now called Haiti), where many Acadians died.

Three of their children, Marie, Scholastique, and Paul eventually ended up in Louisiana where they had families. When Marie wed Pierre Michel in New Orleans on 3 Mar 1766, her parents are named, but noted as deceased(SLC, B5, 190). The first record that mentions the parents are deceased is Paul's marriage on 23 July 1789(SM Ch.: v.4, #32). It seems likely they died much earlier given the number of deaths that occurred in Santo Domingo and that their youngest child was in Louisiana at least by 1 Jan 1777 when he was included in a census of Cabanocey as a 19-year old hired hand of Paul Martin. Some believe he was orphaned much earlier and came to Louisiana with his sisters before 1766.

Unfortunately it is not known for certain when Francois and his wife died or even where. It is definitely known that his wife did not died in Port Royal in 1754 as her current memorial indicates.

467 François Pellerin came from Québec and so did his wife Andrée Martin, and the two were married at Beaubassin, according to Joseph LeBlanc, husband of his great-granddaughter Marie-Modeste Hébert (Doc. inéd., Vol. III, pp. 45-46). John Tierney, an Irishman originally from Limerick who had married Marie-Modeste?s sister Madeleine-Pélagie Hébert at Liverpool in England shortly before the repatriation of the exiles in 1763, swore to exactly the same thing (ibid., p. 93). Both of these depositions contain errors regarding the Pellerins, and these errors show that the deponents misunderstood their wives? forebears? history. First, they said that the first Pellerin in this line was Jacques, instead of François, and then they mistakenly thought that François?s wife was named Marie Colbec, rather than Andrée Martin. The name Colbec (originally Caudebec) was actually the nickname borne by Andrée Martin?s second husband, Pierre Mercier, so Andrée had become Madame Colbec, but that was not her maiden name. It is not known where Andrée Martin married François Pellerin, but it was probably at Port-Royal, because she and François were living at Port-Royal six years afterwards, at the time of the 1671 census, which was taken before the settlement of Beaubassin began. It was at Beaubassin, however, that Andrée married Pierre Mercier, as is attested by their marriage record in the register of that parish (April 24, 1679). And there is a Québec connection, but it was to what is now the province of Québec, and not from there, that Andrée and her second husband moved, between the time of the 1703 census in Acadia and the marriage of their daughter Madeleine-Michelle at Montmagny in 1706. The Merciers settled on the Rivière du Sud, in back of Montmagny (see DGFA-1, pp. 1174-1175, 1277-1278). Interestingly, in 1767 the Acadians would normally have continued to call the country in which Montmagny and the Rivière du Sud are situated Canada, but John Tierney was a British subject, and the British had begun to call the whole country by the name of its chief city Pellerin, Francois (I9796)

468 Francois Rimbaeau/Rimbault was born about 1656, as he was 63 years old when he died. He is the son of Rene Raimbault and Anne-Marie (Amérindienne Mi'Kmac). He married Marie Babin in 1686, in Acadie.

Francois was buried 3 January 1719.

484 from Prejean Genealogy web-site

Jean Prejean dit LeBreton was the first Prejean to settle in Acadia (what is now Nova Scotia). He was born in France about 1651 and died on June 6, 1733 in Port Royal, Acadia. He married Andree Marguerite Savoie, daughter of Francois Savoie and Catherine LeJeune, in Port Royal.

Jean settled on the west bank of the Annapolis River about 17 miles east of Port Royal near what is now Paradise, formerly Paradise Terrestie (Earthly Paradise).

There, he and his wife raised eight sons and four daughters.

It is from Jean that most Prejean's in North America descend. All Cajun Prejean's in Louisiana descend from Jean through his grandsons - Amand and Joseph.

Although there were four Prejean brothers to migrate to Louisiana after "Le Grand Derangement" of the Acadians in 1755, only Amand and Joseph produced male heirs that propagated the Prejean name in Louisiana.

The Prejeans in Louisiana can be split into two groups - the "Southwest Louisiana Prejeans" originating from Amand Prejean in the areas of Carencro and Opelousas, and the "Bayou Lafourche Prejeans" originating from Joseph Prejean in the area surrounding Bayou Lafourche.

Jean Bastarache (Joannis Basterretche), known as the Basque, was born around 1658. He settled in Port-Royal, on land on the south shore of the Dauphin River (now the Annapolis River), near the earthly Paradise (now Paradise). His name appears in the Acadian documents from the 1686 census, where he has already been married for about two years to Huguette Vincent, daughter of Pierre Vincent and Anne Gaudet. In 1714, the year after the definitive surrender of Acadia to Great Britain, Jean Bastarache was among the Acadian inhabitants who embarked on the ship of King Mary Joseph to pass to Île Royale. But if he was gone, it wasn't long before he turned around. Jean Bastarache died in Port-Royal on September 5, 1733, aged seventy-five years. He was the father of five children, the youngest of whom was Pierre

Translated by Google:

The fact that Jean Bastarache was recorded at Port Royal in 1703 as " Joannis Lebasque " clearly indicates his origin. He was born around 1658 and came to Acadia before 1685 , when he married Huguette Vincent, daughter of Pierre Vincent and Anne Gaudet. Jean Bastarache died at Port Royal on September 5, 1733. The youngest of his five children was called Pierre. He was born in Port Royal, July 18, 1702 , and married in the same place on 19 January 1724 to Marguerite Forest, daughter of René and Françoise Dugas Forest . Pierre Bastarache died at Port Royal, 7 May 1751 .

Jean Bastarache (Bastarache dit le Basque)
Gender: Male
Birth: circa 1658
Bayonne, Aquitaine, France
Death: September 06, 1733 (71-79)
New France, Acadia
Immediate Family:
Son of Joannis " Jean" Bazterretxe and N.n Bastarache
Husband of Huguette Agathe Vincent
Father of Marie-Anne Bastarache; Pierre Bastarache Dit Le Basque; Marie Orillon dit Champagne; Jeanne Bastarache; Michel Bastarache; Pierre Bastarache; Francois Marie Bastarache and Jean Bastarache « less

The ancestor of the Bastarache family in Acadia was Jean Bastarache. He was called "Le Basque" because he came from the Basque country

August 1695 Jean Bastarache took the oath of allegiance to the King of England at Port-Royal; he made his mark on the document.

In 1703 Jean Bastarache was listed in the census as "Joannis Le Basque" and in 1714 as "Le Basque," which clearly attests to his origin.

29 August Jean Bastarache appears on the list of the inhabitants of Acadia who embarked on the King's vessel, La Marie Joseph, to go to Ile-Royale.

Jean Joannis Bastarache/dit Le Basque, born in 1658 at Bayonne, in the Basque country of southern France, reached Acadia by 1684, the year he married Huguette or Agathe, a daughter of Pierre Vincent and Anne Gaudet, at Port-Royal. They settled on the upper south shore of Rivière-au-Dauphin, now the Annapolis River, miles above the village at Port-Royal, near present-day Paradis, Nova Scotia. Jean and Huguette had five children. Their two daughters married into the Orillon dit Champagne and Girouard families. All three of Jean and Huguette's sons created families of their own:

Oldest son François-Marie, born at Port-Royal in 1687, married Agnès, daughter of Louis-Noël Labauve and Marie Rimbault, at Annapolis Royal in 1714. They had five children, including two sons, but neither of them seems to have married and created families of their own.

Jean, fils, born at Port-Royal in 1696, married Angélique, daughter of Alexandre Richard and Isabelle Petitpas, at Annapolis Royal in 1721. Jean, fils died at Québec in 1757 during Le Grand Dérangement.

Youngest son Pierre, born at Port-Royal in c1702, married Marguerite, daughter of René Forest and Françoise Dugas, at Annapolis Royal in 1724. Pierre died at Annapolis Royal in 1751, age 50.

In 1707, Jean dit Le Basque and his family were still on the river above Port-Royal. When the British took over the colony in 1714, Jean left Port-Royal on the French vessel La Marie-Josèphe for Île Royale, today's Cape Breton Island, probably to look at land there. He died at Annapolis Royal in September 1733, age 75, so he evidently had not liked what he had seen on the big island. Jean, père's sons, like their father, remained in the Annapolis Royal area.

According to Acadian genealogist Bona Arsenault, Jean's brother Michel dit Le Basque also came to the colony, where he was known as a flibustier, or pirate. He brought with him a wife and two children, including a son, Edmond. Arsenault insists that in 1713, at Annapolis Royal, Edmond married Agathe de Saint-Etienne de La Tour, a descendant of former governor Charles La Tour. According to genealogist Stephen A. White, however, it was Edmund Bradstreet of County Tipperary, Ireland, a young lieutenant in the British service, who married Agathe de La Tour at Annapolis Royal, in 1712. The Bastaraches who ended up in Louisiana came from Jean's line, not Michel's.

The family name is spelled Barastarache, Basque, Basterretche, Bastrash. [See also Book Ten]

ACADIA

Abraham Dugas, a skilled gunsmith perhaps from Chouppes, Poitiers, France, born in c1616, reached Acadia in the early 1640s--among the early settlers of the colony. (There is genetic evidence that Abraham may have had Jewish ancestry, which would have made him unique among his fellow Acadians.) In October 1687, Abraham "made his mark on an attestation in favour of Governor d'Aulnay's accomplishments," which attests to his early presence in the colony. Abraham also was more than a gunsmith at Port-Royal. According to a high French official, Abraham Dugas "carried out the functions of general representative of the King [in civil and criminal matters]," so he probably came from an influential family in France. Abraham married Marguerite, daughter of Germain Doucet, sieur de La Verdure and his first wife, at Port-Royal in c1647. They had eight children, five daughters and three sons, all born at Port-Royal. Abraham died at Port-Royal by 1700. In December 1705, in order to increase the size of the fort at Port-Royal, colonial officials appropriated two lots "adjoining and drawing towards the old fort" that belonged to Abraham's heirs. His daughters married into the Melanson ditLa Ramée, Bourgeois, Mignot dit Châtillon, Arseneau, and LeBlanc families. All three of his sons also created their own families. Some of his children and grandchildren left Port-Royal and settled at Chignecto, Cap-Sable, Minas, Cobeguit, and on Île Royale and Île St.-Jean.

Oldest son Claude, born in c1649, a gunsmith like his father, married first to Françoise, daughter of Jacques Bourgeois and Jeanne Trahan, at Port-Royal in c1673. They had 12 children, including three sons who married daughters of Bernard Bourg. Their nine daughters married into the Melanson, Forest, Bourg, Part dit LaForest, Thibodeau, Hébert, Broussard, and Brun families. Claude remarried to Marguerite, another daughter of Bernard Bourg and Françoise Brun, at Port-Royal in c1697. They had 10 children, including five sons who married into the Coste, Girouard, and Robichaudfamilies. Their five daughters married into the Aubois dit Dubois, Bergeron dit d'Amboise, Amireau, and Belliveaufamilies. Claude also owned land at Chignecto as early as 1682. Claude died at Port-Royal in October 1732, in his early 80s, no doubt surrounded by many children, grandchildren, and even great-grandchildren. Most of his children from his first marriage remained at Port-Royal, though two of his sons settled at Cobeguit, and children from his second marriage settled not only at Port-Royal, but also on Rivière St.-Jean and at Port-Toulouse and Port-d'Orléans on Île Royale, today's Cape Breton Island. Several of his grandchildren settled at Minas. By the early 1750s, many of his grandchildren had moved to Île St.-Jean, today's Prince Edward Island, probably to escape British authority in Nova Scotia.
