      US MARINE CORPS WORLD WAR II

      Cletus James Mosbach enlisted in the Marine Corps 16 February, 1942 from Whittemore, Iowa. Completed recruit training in the 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, MCB San Diego, CA. 4 April, 1942 assigned to G Company, 2nd Battalion, 6th Marines, 2nd Marine Division, MCB Camp Elliott, CA.

      15 July, 1942 assigned to L Company, 3rd Battalion, 21st Marines (Rein), MCB New River, NC. Promoted to Private First Class. During October, 1942 moved by rail to MCB Camp Elliott, CA. 10 February, 1943 assigned to HQ Company, Marine Barracks, MCB Camp Elliott.

      During March, 1944 embarked Naval Vessel at San Diego for movement overseas with a Replacement Battalion. Assigned to F Company, 2nd Battalion, 24th Marines, 4th Marine Division, Camp Maui.

      12 May, 1944 embarked USS Knox (APA-46) for landing rehearsals. 20-29 May, 1944 in Pearl Harbor. 8-11 June, 1944 at Eniwetok, Marshalls. 15 June, 1944 landed on Blue Beach One Saipan D-Day and participated in combat operations until 9 July, 1944. 18 July, 1944 promoted to Corporal.

      23 July, 1944 embarked Naval Vessel at Tinian. 24 July, 1944 landed White Beach Tinian D-Day operations and participated in combat operations until Killed in Action 5 August, 1944.

      Next of Kin: Father, Mr John Mosbach (1876-1944), General Delivery, Whittemore, Iowa. Mother Mrs Katherine Mosbach (1879-1928).

      Initially buried in the 4th Marine Division Cemetery on Tinian. Later enlarged into the USAF American Cemetery Tinian.

      1948 returned to the US for permanent burial in Whittemore, Iowa.
