    • ?Widow Harding? was assessed 9s in the tax list for Plymouth on 25 Mar. 1633.(3) Martha died in 1633 in Plymouth and left an estate worth only £20. 18s. 6d. She left the care of her young son Joseph to Dea. John Done who also probably took care of John as well:

?John Done presented an inventory of the goods & chattels of Martha Harding, deceased, who, in the behalf of her son, was allowed the administrator of the said Martha.? (1)

This Martha Harding dyed w/out a will leaving one son in the custody of Mr John Done the administrator of the said Martha? (2)

The ?Suma? at the end of the tabulation concerns the debts which she still owed from her husband. It appears that she owed £33.9s.1d. so her estate was insolvent. Given the joyners tools in the inventory I suspect that was her husbands trade. Why were they so much in debt? It doesn?t appear that they owned any property to explain the debt. They owed money to folks in England. Was this for their transportation over here? Some of the debt seems to be to his brother in England. Too bad they didn?t write down their names and where they lived! Joseph and Martha both died so young? leaving two little boys orphans? a sad story and one I would love to know more about.
Much of this document is difficult to read. I am usually quite good at deciphering 17th century hand writing, however, this one is a challenge! So I've uploaded the original record? have a go at it! If anyone can figure out the rest of the document, let me know as perhaps it will fill in some holes in the information on this family.

Born by about 1612, based on estimated date of marriage (and probably some years earlier). Came to Plymouth Colony with her infant son in 1632. Died in Plymouth between 25 March 1633 (tax assessment) and 28 October 1633 (administration of estate).
Married by about 1632 _____ Harding, who presumably died in England before his widow and son sailed for New England.
Their only known child: JOSEPH, b. by 1632; m. Eastham 4 April 1660 Bethiah Cooke, daughter of JOSIAS COOKE .
It is likely that Martha Harding was sister to JOHN DOANE , who administered her estate and took her son, Joseph, into his household after her death. Joseph Harding was complained of on 3 June 1652 for "carrying an Indian's gun unto the smith to be mended in his uncle's name," and it is assumed by some that the uncle mentioned here would be JOHN DOANE .
