    • VANDERDONK, Arie - age 95, passed away peacefully in Halifax on Tuesday May 3rd, 2016 surrounded by family. Arie was born on February 17th, 1921 in Culemborg, The Netherlands. Following the Canadian Liberation of Holland in 1945, Arie chose to make Canada his new home in 1951. While studying to be a Brother, he met a wonderful lady from PEI, Loretta (Arsenault). They were married for 55 years and raised four children in Yarmouth, NS. Arie was an active participant in the community including Lion?s Club, Air Cadets, School Board member, and Town Council. He was extensively involved with the Saint Ambrose Parish including lay reader, Eucharistic minister, altar server, choir member, Catechist, greeter, usher; a real pillar of the church. He was a finish carpenter by trade and an agent for Canada Life until his retirement at age 65. He enjoyed camping, wine making, wood working (that he always managed to donate to someone), bridge group, rosary making (which were distributed all across the world including to Mother Theresa), loved pets but most of all he loved a cup of coffee with his friends and family. He was the consummate family man with complete dedication to his wife, children and grandchildren, whom he loved very much. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Loretta (Arsenault) of Howlan, Prince Edward Island. His son Jan (Irena Rot), Vanderdonk, Halifax. Daughters Ludwina (Jacques Maillet) Vanderdonk, Ottawa. Michelle (Scott) Schnare, Halifax. Veronica (Mike MacLean) Vanderdonk, Halifax. Grandchildren: Kallie, Kersten, Ryley, McKenzie and Hana. Sisters, Petronella Muise, Yarmouth, Els van den Hooff, Culemborg, Netherlands and brother Leo Vanderdonk, Hoeven, Netherlands and his many cousins, nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his father Jan Cornelius, his mother Petronella (Stavast), brothers Daan, Wouter and Jan, and sisters Henny, Siena and Thea. The family wishes to thank the doctors and nurses of the intensive care unit of the QEII Halifax Infirmary for the wonderful care and compassion that they showed to Arie and the entire family; everyone at Shannex for their ongoing care and concern and would also like to thank all of you who have reached out to show your feelings of Arie. Our Dad lived a full life and he lived it well and we take comfort in knowing that he is in Heaven and that he is with his Mom and Dad and the rest of his family. He will be missed. Visitation will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, with prayers at 8:00, both at H.M. Huskilson?s Funeral Home, 29 Albert Street, Yarmouth.
