    • John 'Bud' Lustgraaf

YUMA, Ariz. - John ''Bud'' Lustgraaf passed away at his home in Yuma on Thursday, April 23. He was 72. Bud was a lifelong resident of Montana. He was born at Great Falls on Jan. 28, 1926. He attended schools in Great Falls. Joining the U.S. Navy in 1944, he served in the South Pacific during World War II. While in the Navy, he served the ship's engine room. He was honorably discharged in 1946.

After returning from his tour of duty, Bud began a career in the construction industry. Bud was married to Jacquelane McDonald in 1948 in Malta. Bud and Jacquelane traveled throughout Montana and Canada where Bud worked in the asphalt construction business until his retirement from American Asphalt in 1989.

An exceptionally fine master mechanic, Bud really understood all aspects of asphalt paving construction and was a mechanical genius. He was often called upon to meet almost impossible repair tasks under tight time restraints. Bud's ability to meet these challenges while maintaining a remarkable sense of humor was a rare trademark in his field. Bud was highly respected for his ability to successfully meet any challenge put to him by his supervisors and fellow workers, as well as competitors. Bud's quick wit and vast knowledge of asphalt construction and mechanical workings truly set him above the rest of the field in which he worked. Bud was a source of knowledge and energy from which many drew throughout his life. He was a very caring and fun person to be associated with for all of his many friends and relatives. Bud was so exceptionally rare that when he was born the mold was broken. Bud's favorite past times were BS, drinking beer, and spending time with his grandchildren.

Bud worked very hard in the construction industry throughout his life. When he retired in 1989, he and Jacquelane moved to Yuma where he enjoyed the sun and desert setting, and the many trips on the Colorado River on the party boat. Bud will be sorely missed by his numerous friends and relatives.

He is survived by his wife Jacqueline at their Yuma home; his daughter, Nancy Latham and her husband Tim of Yuma; his son Bill Lustgraaf of Lolo; his granddaughter Lea Bartlett and her husband Jack, and great-grandchildren, Kiya and Kory Bartlett of El Paso, Texas; his grandson Brian Daigle and his wife, Trina of San Diego and grandson, Josh Latham of Yuma; brother Martin and wife, Hazel of Yuma; brother Edward and his wife, Gladys of Madison, Wis.; sisters Helen Schikany of Great Falls, and Margaret Sweeny and husband, Bernard of Great Falls.

Bud was preceded in death by his father William in 1936 and his mother Louise in 1993.

Bud's body has been cremated. Memorial graveside services are planned in Bud's honor Tuesday, April 28, at 10 a.m. at the Foothills Cemetery in Yuma.
