Biographie

Laurent Granger, a young sailor from Plymouth, England, came to Acadia in the late 1650s during the English occupation. He married Marie, 17-year-old daughter of René Landry l'âiné and Perrine Bourg, at Port-Royal in c1667. Laurent had to convert to Catholicism to marry his Acadian girl. She gave him nine children, including five sons, all born in Port-Royal, who created families of their own.

270 Christopher Andrew Gaudet
of Shirley; 54

SHIRLEY - Christopher Andrew Gaudet, 54, of Shirley, died Wednesday, March 20, 2019 unexpectedly. Christopher struggled with addition throughout his life. Over the past 11 months it had seemed that he had turned a corner and was making strides to overcome it. But addiction is without prejudice or mercy and those of us who love Chris are devastated that picking up a drug just "one last time" truly became the last time for him.

Chris was born in Leominster, May 9, 1964, a son of Donald Joseph Gaudet and Carol (McMilleon) Gaudet. He was a graduate of Lunenburg High School and worked in construction, primarily in garage door service and installation.

He was loved and is survived by his adored daughter, Chelsea Gaudet of Maui, HI, his mother Carol Gaudet of Lunenburg MA, his long-time life partner, Rosetta West of Shirley MA, his brothers John Gaudet of Whitefish MT and Thomas Gaudet of Rehoboth MA, his sisters, Dawn Gaudet-Logan of Franklin MA, Julie Gaudet of Lunenburg MA, Leslie Clark of New Gloucester, ME; two stepsisters, Tracy L. Lothrop of Concord, NH, Lisa Bergevin of Townsend MA; a stepbrother, Kevin Bergevin of Fitchburg MA and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, Joseph Gaudet, stepmother, Brenda (Bergevin) Gaudet, stepbrother, Brian Bergevin, nephew Ian Hartwell, Chelsea's mother, Hollie Walsh, and two beloved pet cats, Little Daughter and Cali the one-eyed Wonder Cat.

Chris loved listening to music, and had a wide variety of tastes. His Spotify playlist included everyone from Led Zeppelin to Nickel Creek to Destiny's Child. He particularly loved the Beatles and John was his favorite. He believed Gladys Knight and Dolly Parton are "national treasures". He also enjoyed classic hard rock, "?REAL country, like Yoakam, and NOT just pop songs sung with southern accents", and he loved the song 'When I Think of You' by Janet Jackson. He enjoyed reading the daily newspapers, listening to WBUR and watching public television on WGBH, WGBX, and WSBE, especially Nature, Masterpiece, and Mystery. He also enjoyed watching TMZ, America This Morning (AKA 'news for insomniacs'), the classic detective shows Columbo and the Rockford Files, true crime shows, Svengoolie, and Amanpour & Company. He was a fan of the Buffalo Bills from back in the Jim Kelly days and rooted for them to win every week?at least when they were not playing the NE Patriots.

Chris will be very much missed by the family and friends who loved him. Those who would like to honor his memory are encouraged to donate to WGBH (https://www.wgbh.org/support/donate) or their local public television station, to WBUR (https://www.wbur.org/support) or their local NPR station, to Sterling Animal Shelter, Inc.; 17 Laurelwood Avenue; Sterling, MA 01564 or any no-kill animal shelter.

292 COMEAU, ANSELM-FRANÇOIS, farmer, businessman, politician, and magistrate; b. 2 Dec. 1793 at Comeauville, N.S., second son of Major François Comeau and Marguerite Melanson; m. in 1824 Marie-Gertrude Amirault (d. 4 Sept. 1865), and they had four sons and five daughters; d. 27 Nov. 1867 at Comeauville.

Anselm-François Comeau was the grandson of François (Maza) Comeau and Félicité Le Blanc, the first family to settle at Comeauville. Although there were no regular schools in the area during his youth, he received instruction from an itinerant school-teacher, Louis Bunel, who taught in the vicinity of Comeauville from 1798 to 1825. A late 19th century local history suggests that Comeau worked at farming, lumbering, and fishing but also had some intellectual interests. The books he kept as clerk of Clare Township from 1831 to 1837 show a good handwriting and precise spelling in both French and English. He owned a small farm and a sawmill, and in 1835 was appointed postmaster of Clare. He also owned 1,000 acres of land in Digby County.

Clare Township was part of the Annapolis County constituency in the assembly until the 1840 general election. When it was given its own seat, Comeau declared himself a Reform candidate. According to the Yarmouth Herald, on 13 Nov. 1840, he was the sole contestant, but in a report two weeks later the same newspaper noted that Frederick Armand Robicheau, a Clare resident who had been a Reform party candidate in Digby Township, had shifted his candidacy to his home riding. The polls favoured Comeau, referred to in newspaper reports as ?Samuel Commo.?

He was re-elected in 1843, 1847, and 1851, but apparently took no active part in the assembly debates, usually supporting the Reformers. In 1848 he was appointed magistrate in Clare. He did not stand for re-election at the end of his fourth term in the assembly but was appointed to the Legislative Council in July 1855, the first Acadian in the Maritime provinces to be so honoured. He continued to serve in the council until his death in 1867. The Halifax Novascotian had kind words for him: ?No politician can ever leave behind him a fairer record than Anselm Comeau. True always, despite all temptation, to what he believed the right, he has left behind him a memory free from all spot or stain.? Since Comeau?s time the Acadians of Digby County have almost always been Reform or Liberal party supporters.
